Park
Benbow State Recreation Area covers 1,142 acres in Humboldt County, California, two miles south of Garberville along U.S. Route 101 on the Wild and Scenic South Fork Eel River.
Once featuring Benbow Lake behind a 1931 hydroelectric dam removed in 2017 to restore salmon habitat, it now offers riverfront day-use picnicking, swimming in summer, catch-and-release fishing for steelhead and salmon in winter, over nine miles of hiking trails through conifer hills, and 75 seasonal campsites from Memorial Day to Labor Day with most reservable.
Open daily from sunrise to sunset with $8 day-use parking, leashed pets allowed except on trails, and amenities like restrooms, the park hosts the annual Summer Arts and Music Festival each June amid Indigenous Sinkyone and Wailaki heritage.
