Historical Landmark
The Biloxi Lighthouse, completed in 1848, is a historic cast-iron lighthouse standing 64 feet tall on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
It was one of the first cast-iron lighthouses built in the South and constructed from bolted cast-iron plates surrounding a brick core, designed to withstand the coastal climate. Authorized by Congress with a $12,000 budget, it was built by the Baltimore foundry of Murray and Hazlehurst and assembled under Henry Scoles' supervision. The lighthouse has faced numerous challenges including hurricanes and erosion, notably tilting during an 1860 storm before being corrected.
It operated continuously to aid navigation into Biloxi harbor, with notable keepers including Maria Younghans, who served for over 50 years. Today, it is a city landmark and symbol of resilience, surviving Hurricane Katrina's storm surge with significant damage but restored as an important historical and cultural icon. Visitors can tour the lighthouse and nearby Biloxi Visitor Center, which offers exhibits on the area's history.
