Historical Place
Windsor Ruins in Claiborne County, Mississippi, are the remnants of the largest antebellum Greek Revival mansion ever built in the state.
Constructed between 1859 and 1861 by wealthy cotton planter Smith Coffee Daniell II, the mansion featured 29 massive Corinthian columns, each 40 feet tall atop 10-foot brick bases, with ornate iron capitals and balustrades. The 17,000-square-foot mansion had 23 rooms, including numerous fireplaces, interior bathrooms, a schoolroom, doctor's office, library, and an observatory, all built with skilled artisans and slave labor.
The mansion stood through the Civil War but was destroyed by fire in 1890, leaving only 23 complete columns and several partial columns standing today. Now stabilized and preserved as a historic landmark, the ruins serve as a striking symbol of Mississippi's antebellum history, showcasing architectural grandeur while reminding visitors of the complex and often painful past tied to the plantation era.
