Trail
Bright Angel Trail is the most popular and iconic hiking route in Grand Canyon National Park, starting at the South Rim near Bright Angel Lodge and descending approximately 4,380 feet to the Colorado River over about 9.5 miles.
The trail is well-maintained, graded for animals and hikers, and offers features including shaded rest houses at 1.5 miles and 3 miles, as well as Havasupai Gardens, a green oasis midway.
The route provides stunning views of the canyon’s rock formations and layers. It is an intense hike because the elevation gain on the return is strenuous, and hikers are advised to carry plenty of water and take precautions with heat, especially in summer. Many choose to hike only partway or overnight at Phantom Ranch via permit.
Safety recommendations warn against attempting a round trip in one day due to the physical demands and temperature extremes. The trail includes some natural tunnels and gives hikers the chance to witness diverse geology, wildlife, and canyon vistas during their trek.
