Historical Landmark
The Desert View Watchtower is a 70-foot tall stone tower located on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, designed by architect Mary Colter and completed in 1932.
It was inspired by Ancestral Puebloan watchtowers and built to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings using native, weathered stones and reclaimed timber. The tower features circular balconies, a kiva-style lower level with a fireplace and large viewing windows, and an observation deck with panoramic views of the Grand Canyon and Painted Desert beyond. Its interior includes murals by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie and petroglyph-style decorations replicating ancient rock art.
The watchtower offers visitors culturally rich experiences, including Native American art demonstrations, and presents unique vantage points of the canyon’s evolving landscape. It is part of a historic district and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark for its architectural and cultural significance.
