The London Bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, was originally built in the 1830s over the River Thames in London, England, designed by Scottish engineer John Rennie.
As the bridge aged, it could no longer support the increasing weight and volume of modern traffic and was sinking into the river. In 1968, American businessman Robert P. McCulloch purchased the bridge from the City of London for approximately $2.46 million to attract tourists and promote development in his planned community of Lake Havasu City.
The bridge was carefully dismantled, with each granite block numbered and cataloged, then shipped through the Panama Canal to Long Beach, California, and transported overland to Arizona. Reassembled with a modern concrete substructure clad in the original stones, the bridge opened in Lake Havasu in 1971, spanning the Bridgewater Channel and connecting the mainland to Pittsburgh Point.
Today, it is a major tourist attraction and one of Arizona’s most iconic landmarks, symbolizing an intriguing blend of historic architecture and desert landscape.
