State Park
Bruneau Dunes State Park in southern Idaho is home to the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America, rising about 470 feet above the surrounding desert floor in a unique basin called Eagle Cove.
The park covers approximately 4,800 acres and features a dramatic desert landscape of sand dunes, small lakes, wetlands, prairie, and surrounding sagebrush steppe. Visitors can enjoy activities like hiking, sandboarding, fishing in the ponds, birdwatching, horseback riding on extensive trails, camping, and stargazing at the park’s public observatory, which houses one of Idaho’s largest telescopes.
The park’s dunes are stable and formed by sediment trapped in a natural basin over thousands of years, creating a visually striking contrast with the surrounding terrain. Facilities include a visitor center with educational exhibits, picnic areas, and campgrounds, attracting around 85,000 visitors a year who come to experience the natural beauty and diverse ecosystems of this distinctive desert park.
