Park
Burleigh H. Murray Ranch State Park is a 1,325-acre historic property in a pristine valley in San Mateo County, California, inland from Half Moon Bay, preserving a dairy ranch founded in 1857 by a Gold Rush settler from Vermont who transitioned to farming with sheep, cattle, and cows.
Named for Burleigh H. Murray, born on the site in 1865, it features the rare Mills Barn—a late-1800s English-style bank barn built into a hillside, originally 200 feet long for 100 dairy cows, maintained in arrested decay alongside outbuildings and an arched stone bridge using Italian masonry—now accessible via a gentle one-mile trail along perennial Mills Creek past a 1930s bungalow.
The serene area offers solitude amid mature eucalyptus groves, diverse wildlife, a sensitive riparian corridor with California red-legged frogs and steelhead trout, hiking, biking, and horseback riding on trails, though it lacks water, restrooms, camping, or fires, with dogs leashed on service roads only.
