Cave
The natural entrance of Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico was formed by surface erosion and collapse over the past few million years, creating a large opening into a limestone cave system.
Native Americans, including the Mescalero Apache and Pueblo peoples, knew of the cave and left pictographs and artifacts near the entrance thousands of years ago. The cave was rediscovered by early settlers in the late 19th century, and in 1882, 16-year-old Jim White famously explored it further after noticing a large swarm of bats exiting the cave at dusk.
The cave features vast underground chambers, including the Big Room, one of the largest limestone chambers in North America, with spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, and unique rock formations. Visitors originally accessed the cave by a steep walk down a switchback ramp through the natural entrance, but elevators were installed in the early 1930s to provide easier access.
The Carlsbad Caverns became a National Monument in 1923 and a National Park in 1930, known for its geological beauty, bat colony, and extensive cave system that continues to be explored. The natural entrance area remains a popular site for watching the evening bat flight and viewing ancient rock art near the cave mouth.
