Beach
Carpinteria State Beach is a popular 62-acre protected beach in Santa Barbara County, California, 12 miles south of Santa Barbara, featuring a mile of wide white sand ideal for swimming, surf fishing, tidepool exploration, sunbathing, volleyball, birdwatching, hiking, biking, and beachcombing amid terraced bluffs and dune areas.
Named "La Carpinteria" by Spanish explorers in 1769 after observing Chumash people building plank canoes with natural asphaltum tar from offshore seeps—still visible as tar balls on the shore—it includes Carpinteria Creek lagoon for wildlife and connects to the harbor seal preserve and rookery nearby.
Established in 1932 with over 200 campsites across San Miguel, Carpinteria, and Elmar units, plus day-use areas near Linden Avenue, it offers picnic tables, restrooms, showers, a kids' play area, and proximity to downtown shops and eateries, though dogs are banned on the beach (leashed on trails) and parking fees apply year-round.
