Park
Cave-In-Rock State Park spans 204 acres along limestone bluffs overlooking the Ohio River in Hardin County, southern Illinois, near the town of Cave-in-Rock.
Its centerpiece is a dramatic 55-foot-wide cave carved by water erosion and shaped by the 1811–1812 New Madrid earthquakes, once a notorious hideout for river pirates, outlaws, and counterfeiters preying on flatboats in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
Acquired by Illinois in 1929 and expanded since, it offers hiking trails with river views, Class A and B camping, a lodge and restaurant, picnic shelters, playgrounds, fishing and boating on the Ohio, hunting, and modern amenities amid wooded hills, blending natural wonder with Wild West lore.
