State Government Office
The Colorado State Capitol in Denver, completed in 1894, was designed by architect Elijah E. Myers to resemble the United States Capitol with neoclassical Corinthian style and a Greek Cross floor plan.
Constructed with Colorado white granite and topped by a distinctive gold-plated dome using gold leaf from a local mine to commemorate the Colorado Gold Rush, it stands as a prominent historic and government building. The interior features a main entrance hall that rises 180 feet to the dome’s top, equivalent to an 18-story building’s height.
The Capitol houses the Colorado General Assembly and offices for the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Treasurer. It resides at the eastern edge of Denver's Civic Center and marks the beginning of the Capitol Hill district. The building has undergone modern safety upgrades while preserving its original architectural integrity, and the official elevation of Denver, "One Mile Above Sea Level," is engraved on the fifteenth step outside the west entrance.
The Capitol is a symbol of Colorado’s history, government, and architectural heritage, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Civic Center Historic District.
