Park
Lone Mesa State Park is a large, remote Colorado state park of about 11,600–12,000 acres in Dolores County, roughly 23 miles north of the town of Dolores, covering elevations from about 7,200 to just over 9,000 feet.
The park sits in a rugged, high‑desert and montane landscape, with sagebrush‑covered lower slopes, aspen and ponderosa‑pine forests, and dramatic canyons that feed the headwaters of Plateau Creek. It is known for its wilderness character and rich wildlife, especially as a premier hunting area for elk, deer, and black bear, and it is currently closed to general public recreation, with access restricted to limited‑draw hunting permits, volunteer work, and educational programs.
The park also supports rare plant species and archaeological sites, and while it has no typical developed campground or visitor facilities, it is being managed as a conservation and backcountry‑hunting “crown jewel” within Colorado’s state‑park system.
