Government Office
The Connecticut State Capitol, located in Hartford and completed in 1878, is the third state capitol building since the American Revolution and serves as the seat of Connecticut’s government.
Designed by Richard M. Upjohn in a distinctive High Victorian Gothic style with elements of French and Gothic Revival architecture, it is built from East Canaan marble and Westerly granite. The building is notable for its ornate exterior, mansard roofs, and large dome, and its interior features intricate wood paneling and detailed murals commemorating Connecticut’s history, particularly the Civil War.
The site was chosen on Trinity Hill, adjacent to Bushnell Park, formerly home to Trinity College, providing ample open space around the capitol. Since its opening, the building has remained a key political and cultural symbol for the state, hosting the General Assembly and housing important state offices while also being a National Historic Landmark and appreciated for its architectural beauty.
