State Park
Fort Trumbull State Park in New London, Connecticut, encompasses a historic granite fort originally built in 1777 to protect the New London Harbor during the American Revolutionary War, named after Governor Jonathan Trumbull.
The fort was captured and its surrounding town burned by British forces led by Benedict Arnold in 1781. Rebuilt between 1839 and 1852 as a five-sided coastal defense fort, it featured heavy artillery and bastions to fend off naval attacks. Throughout the 19th century, Fort Trumbull served military roles in the War of 1812 and Civil War, including training Union troops.
In the 20th century, it was home to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy before the academy moved upriver in 1932. The site also hosted Naval and Merchant Marine training facilities until the late 1990s. Today, it is managed as a 16-acre state park with preserved fortifications and offers historical exhibits, walking trails, and scenic views of the Thames River, commemorating its long military heritage spanning over two centuries.
