National Forest
Coronado National Forest spans about 1.78 million acres across southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, encompassing multiple mountain ranges known as "sky islands."
These isolated mountains rise dramatically from desert landscapes, creating diverse ecosystems with a wide variety of plants and animals, some found nowhere else in the U.S. The forest has eight designated wilderness areas and offers activities including hiking, camping, birdwatching, horseback riding, rock climbing, and winter sports. It also contains unique geological features like caves and waterfalls.
The forest is historically significant, named after explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, and includes sites from early mining history. Its mix of desert and mountainous terrain provides striking scenic views and varied recreational opportunities throughout the year.
