Historical Landmark
Cove Fort, located in Millard County, Utah, was built in 1867 at the direction of Brigham Young as a strategic waystation and refuge for travelers along the Mormon Corridor between Salt Lake City and southern settlements.
Constructed of volcanic rock and limestone, the fort walls are 18 feet high and 100 feet long, enclosing 12 rooms arranged around a large courtyard. It served as a safe resting place during the Black Hawk War, a period of Native American conflicts in the region, and functioned as a stagecoach stop, telegraph station, and center for mail and freighting.
The fort was operated by Ira Hinckley and his family, who made it both a defensive structure and a welcoming home, famously never coming under attack. Families lived at the fort over many years as it evolved from a transportation hub to a historical landmark preserved for its unique architecture and frontier history.
Today, Cove Fort offers visitors a glimpse into pioneer life with restored rooms, authentic furnishings, and ongoing efforts to reconstruct outbuildings, standing as one of the few well-preserved territorial-era forts in Utah.
