State Park
Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas is the only diamond-bearing site in the world open to the public where visitors can search for real diamonds on a 37-acre plowed field that is the eroded surface of an ancient volcanic crater.
People come from all over to dig for diamonds, as well as other gemstones and minerals like amethyst, jasper, garnet, and quartz, and they can keep whatever they find. The park offers tools for rent or visitors can bring their own non-powered equipment for mining.
More than 35,000 diamonds have been found there since it became a state park in 1972, including some notable large stones such as the 40.23-carat Uncle Sam, which is the largest diamond ever discovered in the US. The park also features a visitor center and a Diamond Discovery Center with exhibits on the geology and history of the site, and offers educational programs and demonstrations.
The volcanic pipe that formed the crater brought diamonds from deep within the earth’s mantle to the surface over 100 million years ago, making it a unique natural and recreational destination that combines science with the excitement of treasure hunting.
