Park
Cross Mound Park, a 28+ acre site in Clearcreek Township, Fairfield County near Tarlton, Ohio, centers on a rare prehistoric earthwork shaped like a plus-sign cross with four identical arms each 12 feet wide, 3 feet high, and 45 feet long, aligned nearly to cardinal directions and featuring a central 20-foot circular depression.
Likely built during the Middle Woodland period possibly by Hopewell or Fort Ancient peoples, its purpose remains unknown amid smaller stone mounds, with access via a 1936 WPA suspension bridge over Salt Creek. Managed by Fairfield County Parks since 1994 transfer from Ohio History Connection and listed on the National Register since 1970.
It welcomes year-round picnicking, hiking a half-mile trail, birding, dog walking on leash, and photography in a scenic setting open dusk to dawn with no entrance fee.
