Park
Cumberland Mountain State Park spans 1,720 acres on Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau near Crossville around the man-made Byrd Lake, created in the 1930s as part of the New Deal-era Cumberland Homesteads Project.
Originally developed by Civilian Conservation Corps workers and homestead families to provide recreation for relocated Depression-era residents, the park opened in 1940 and features historic sandstone structures listed on the National Register, including the iconic seven-arch dam and Mill House Lodge.
Visitors enjoy an 18-hole Bear Trace golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus, hiking and biking trails like the Pioneer Short Loop and Byrd Creek Trail, boating and fishing on the lake, swimming in an Olympic-sized pool, rustic cabins and 147 campsites, plus picnicking, tennis, and birdwatching amid lush forests.
