State Park
Custer State Park in South Dakota covers 71,000 acres of diverse landscapes in the Black Hills, including prairies, granite peaks, lakes, and forests.
It is home to one of the largest publicly owned bison herds in the world, with around 1,300 animals roaming freely alongside other wildlife such as pronghorn antelope, deer, elk, mountain goats, and bighorn sheep. The park offers many outdoor activities including hiking, biking, horseback riding, fishing, camping, and scenic drives on famous routes like the Needles Highway and Wildlife Loop Road, where visitors can often see wildlife up close.
The park also hosts the annual Buffalo Roundup, a popular event each September where cowboys herd bison to corrals for counting and auction. Originally designated as a forest reserve and game preserve in the early 20th century, it became South Dakota's first state park thanks to efforts by Governor Peter Norbeck.
With campgrounds, lodges, lakes, and cultural offerings like the Black Hills Playhouse nearby, it is a top destination for nature lovers and outdoor adventurers alike.
