Situated on a massive sandstone block dropped 200 feet along an ancient fault line from 315 million years ago, it showcases dramatic canyons like Ghost Dance Canyon, spring-fed waterfalls, rocky bluffs up to 60 feet high, and lush forests of oak, hickory, birch, pine, and wildflowers.
Named for early settler William Dixon whose mineral springs drew 19th-century health tourists, the park opened in 1946 with modern additions like a swimming pool, waterslide, campground, hiking trails including the moderate 0.6-mile Ghost Dance Canyon loop, hunting areas, picnicking, and abundant wildlife such as deer, foxes, squirrels, and birds.
