Beach
El Capitán State Beach is a scenic coastal park on the Gaviota Coast about 17–20 miles west of Santa Barbara that features a broad sandy beach, rocky tidepools, sycamore‑and‑oak shaded meadows, and dramatic blufftop views where visitors swim, surf, fish, picnic, and camp.
The park includes a large campground with more than 100 family sites and several group camps, coin‑operated showers and potable water, a campfire center, and a paved coastal bike/walk path that links to nearby Refugio and Gaviota beaches for longer outings.
Trails such as the Bill Wallace Nature Trail climb into the backcountry and offer access to over 2,500 acres of parkland where hikers can explore coastal canyons and backcountry vistas, and a stairway provides safe access from the bluff down to the beach and tidepool areas at low tide.
Wildlife viewing is excellent—look for shorebirds, migrating whales offshore, and intertidal life—and visitors should note that high tides can limit beach access at times, that camping reservations are recommended in peak season, and that some facilities and trail conditions vary seasonally so checking current park information before visiting is advised.
