Historical Landmark
Eldred Rock Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse located in the remote Lynn Canal in Alaska, built and first lit in 1906. It is the oldest original lighthouse still standing in Alaska and the last of twelve lighthouses constructed between 1902 and 1906.
The lighthouse features a distinctive octagonal design with a two-story building made from concrete on the lower floor and wood on the upper, topped by a wooden octagonal tower and lantern. It was the first Alaskan lighthouse constructed with concrete, which contributed to its longevity.
It was built in response to numerous deadly shipwrecks in the area, including the tragic sinking of the steamship Clara Nevada in 1898, which took 75 lives and a large quantity of gold.
The lighthouse contained living quarters for keepers and a first-class compressed-air fog siren on its lower floor, combined in a single structure along with the light and fog-signal apparatus. Eldred Rock was manned until 1973 when it was automated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The original Fresnel lens was removed and is now displayed in a museum in Haines, Alaska.
The lighthouse remains a significant historical landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It stands as a symbol of maritime safety and rugged Alaskan history, surrounded by a vibrant marine ecosystem.
