State Park
Emerald Bay State Park in California, established in 1953 and spanning 1,533 acres, is centered around the stunning Emerald Bay on Lake Tahoe, which was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1969.
The park is famous for its glacier-carved granite landscape, scenic hiking trails like the Rubicon Trail, and the historic Vikingsholm Castle—a 38-room mansion built in 1929 by Lora Josephine Knight, showcasing one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the United States.
The park also includes Fannette Island, the only island in Lake Tahoe, featuring a small stone "Tea House." In 1994, the surrounding waters of Emerald Bay were designated an underwater state park to protect shipwrecks and artifacts on the lakebed.
Visitors enjoy hiking, swimming, kayaking, scuba diving, and exploring the natural beauty and historical sites, with amenities including campgrounds and guided tours. Winters bring colder temperatures and occasional bay freezing, adding to the park’s year-round appeal.
