Emeryville Crescent State Marine Reserve is a protected marsh and tidal shoreline on the east side of San Francisco Bay between Oakland and Emeryville that preserves roughly 100–104 acres of crescent‑shaped coastal wetlands and pickleweed marsh near the foot of Powell Street.
Managed as part of McLaughlin Eastshore State Park, the reserve provides important habitat on the Pacific Flyway for shorebirds and waterfowl, supports estuarine plants and intertidal life, and receives freshwater input from Temescal Creek near the Emeryville–Oakland border.
Public use is limited and low‑impact—walking, birdwatching, and shoreline viewing from adjacent trails and overlooks are common—while activities that would harm the habitat (collecting, off‑trail access, and unauthorized camping) are restricted to protect wildlife and sensitive marsh soils.
The site faces invasive‑species and urban‑pollution challenges (notably Spartina cordgrass invasions and occasional dumping), so active management and restoration efforts, coordinated with regional agencies, focus on invasive‑species control and habitat protection while visitor facilities and parking are concentrated at nearby Eastshore park access points.
