Museum
Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon, across from the municipal airport, showcases over 150 aircraft and spacecraft including the massive Hughes H-4 Hercules "Spruce Goose," the world's largest wooden plane that flew just once in 1947, acquired in 1993 and housed in a vast hangar built around it when the museum opened on June 6, 2001.
Founded in 1991 by Delford Smith of Evergreen International Aviation in memory of his son Captain Michael King Smith, a F-15 pilot killed in 1995, the nonprofit expanded with a Space Museum in 2008 featuring SR-71 Blackbird, Titan II missile, and simulators, plus a 2011 water park, after overcoming 2020 financial woes via purchase by Stoller Family Estate owner Bill Stoller.
Open daily with guided tours, interactive exhibits on aviation history from Wright Flyer replicas to Vietnam-era jets, and veteran stories, the Smithsonian-affiliated site draws families for its immersive hangars, theater, and hands-on education amid Willamette Valley scenery.
