State Park
First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach is a 2,888-acre park named for the site where English colonists first landed in 1607 before establishing Jamestown.
It was originally developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, primarily African American workers, and was Virginia's first planned state park. The park features nearly 20 miles of trails, a mile and a half of sandy beach along the Chesapeake Bay, cabins, camping areas, fishing spots, and boating facilities.
Its landscape includes unique habitats such as bald cypress swamps, maritime forests, lagoons, and dunes, making it a National Natural Landmark. The park also holds historical significance, marked by a cross commemorating the first landing, and it has a rich cultural past including use during the War of 1812 and the Civil War.
Today, it is Virginia's most popular state park, offering a mix of natural beauty, recreational activities, and insight into early American history.
