Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, North Dakota's oldest state park established in 1907 and located seven miles south of Mandan along the Missouri River, preserves the history of a Mandan Indian village called On-a-Slant with five reconstructed earthlodges that housed around 1,500 people from about 1575 to 1781, offering tours into daily life with gardens and artifacts.
The site also features reconstructed remnants of the 1870s U.S. military fort, originally Fort McKeen and renamed Fort Abraham Lincoln, which grew into a major post with 650 soldiers including George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry before his 1876 Little Bighorn departure, complete with blockhouses, barracks, and a furnished commanding officer's house with living history tours.
Visitors enjoy a museum at the center, scenic trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding with river views, fishing on the Missouri and Heart Rivers, plus camping and cabins amid the rolling hills.
