Historical Landmark
Fort Miles Historic Area, located within Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware, was a critical coastal defense fortification established during World War II to protect the Delaware Bay, the Delaware River, and nearby industrial centers such as Philadelphia from enemy naval and air attacks.
Built between 1941 and 1944, Fort Miles featured an extensive network of concrete gun batteries, 15 fire control towers along the coastline, and a system of controlled underwater mines designed to prevent enemy ships from entering the bay. The fort was actively manned by thousands of soldiers, including the locally recruited 261st Coast Artillery, who operated large caliber guns and maintained surveillance for German naval threats.
After World War II, the fort transitioned through phases of reduced military activity, serving as an Army recreational area and later as a Navy base until its military closure in 1991. The site has since been preserved and restored, now housing the Fort Miles Museum in Battery 519, where visitors can explore restored bunkers, artillery, fire control towers, and exhibits interpreting the fort’s historical significance in harbor defense.
The area offers a unique glimpse into coastal military history and the technological and strategic efforts to secure the American east coast during wartime.
