The estate passed through the Shipley family to the Bringhurst and Hargraves families before being gifted to a nonprofit group dedicated to public enjoyment and preservation. New Castle County acquired the property in 1973, undertaking restoration efforts including the mansion and extensive gardens designed with sweeping vistas, curving paths, and historic plantings.
Today, the 72-acre park includes multiple historic buildings such as the mansion, conservatory, porter’s lodge, gardener’s cottage, and carriage house. It offers visitors a glimpse into 19th-century rural aristocratic life with guided tours, public events, and a well-preserved landscape that highlights the estate’s architectural and horticultural legacy.
