Park
Fort Pillow State Historic Park in Henning, Tennessee, spans 1,642 acres on Chickasaw Bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River and preserves the site of the infamous 1864 Civil War Battle of Fort Pillow.
Built by Confederates in 1861 and named for General Gideon J. Pillow, the fort was mostly held by Union forces until April 12, 1864, when Nathan Bedford Forrest's troops overran it, leading to a controversial massacre of surrendering Black Union soldiers and their officers.
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974, the park now offers hiking trails, a visitor center with exhibits, fishing at a 19-acre lake, and stunning bluff views amid wooded terrain.
