Park
Fremont Peak State Park crowns a 3,160–3,173-foot summit in the Gabilan Range on the Monterey–San Benito county border and is prized for its sweeping panoramic views of Monterey Bay, the Salinas and San Benito valleys, the Santa Lucia Mountains, and long coastal and inland vistas that make it a favorite for hikers, photographers, and stargazers.
The compact park (about 159–162 acres) offers a short but rewarding summit trail, primitive tent and a few RV campsites with basic amenities, picnic areas, and a public observatory with a 30‑inch telescope that runs educational star‑viewing programs in season.
Named for John C. Frémont—who raised the U.S. flag there in 1846—the site combines grassy ridges, oak and pine woodlands, and wildlife viewing, and visitors should be prepared for an 11‑mile winding access road from San Juan Bautista, limited services (pit toilets, no showers), variable weather, and seasonal observatory schedules and camping reservations.
