Ghost Town
Garnet Ghost Town in Montana is a well-preserved former gold mining town that dates back to the 1860s and is located high in the Garnet Mountain Range east of Missoula.
Originally named Mitchell after an early mill owner, the town was renamed Garnet in 1897 after the semi-precious stones found nearby. Garnet was a bustling community in the late 1890s with about 1,000 residents, featuring hotels, saloons, stores, a school, and a low crime rate, making it more family-oriented than many mining towns of its era.
A devastating fire in 1912 and the impact of World War I led to its decline, and although the town saw brief revivals tied to gold price increases in the 1930s, it was largely abandoned by the 1940s. By the early 1960s, Garnet was completely deserted, leaving behind cabins, buildings, and artifacts that offer a vivid glimpse into its mining past and community life.
Today, it is managed as a historic site where visitors can explore its original structures and experience Montana’s gold rush history.
