Park
George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area is a small, shady riverside park on the Merced River in the San Joaquin Valley that offers quiet camping, picnicking, swimming, fishing, and gentle hiking along more than a mile of river frontage.
The 46.5‑acre site has primarily tent campsites (many first‑come, first‑served) plus a reservable group camp, picnic tables and grills, flush toilets and potable water, and limited RV access (sites generally suit rigs up to about 30 feet). Anglers come for bass, catfish and seasonal trout (a California fishing license is required), and paddling or tubing on calm stretches of the river is popular in warmer months while swimmers should note there are no lifeguards and riverbanks can be steep.
The park is named for former Lieutenant Governor George J. Hatfield, lies roughly midway between Modesto and Merced near County Road J‑18, and is best visited with layers for variable valley temperatures and advance planning for group‑camp reservations or first‑come campsite availability.
