Park
Giant City State Park spans 4,000 acres across Jackson and Union Counties in southern Illinois within the Shawnee National Forest, near Makanda south of Carbondale.
Acquired starting in 1927 and developed by Civilian Conservation Corps workers who built the iconic sandstone lodge and cabins in the 1930s, it showcases massive sandstone bluffs resembling "Giant City Streets," formed 12,000 years ago through erosion, shelter caves with Native American artifacts from 10,000 years ago, and lush landscapes of ferns, moss, wildflowers, and over 75 tree species.
Visitors explore 20 miles of scenic hiking trails like the popular Giant City Nature Trail, enjoy camping, horseback riding, fishing, rock climbing, rappelling, hunting on 2,891 acres, picnicking, and panoramic views from the lodge, drawing over 1.2 million annually to this rugged outdoor paradise.
