National Reserve
Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument in southwestern New Mexico preserves five natural caves in Cliff Dweller Canyon where Mogollon people built about 40 rooms using stone masonry and adobe mortar between 1275 and 1300 AD, during a period of drought when clans of 40-60 sought shelter amid the Gila Wilderness.
Established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1907 after early European discovery in 1878 and looting concerns, the 533-acre site also includes the TJ Ruins—a bluff-top pueblo from AD 900-1150—and reflects sophisticated Mogollon culture blending hunting, farming, and trade networks from Mexico to Mesa Verde.
Visitors access via a scenic 45-mile drive north from Silver City on NM 15, hike a moderate half-mile trail with ladders to enter the alcoves, explore exhibits at the visitor center, and join ranger tours year-round, though remote location demands preparation for heat, cold, and no cell service.
