Gillette Castle in Connecticut is a distinctive medieval-style fortress built between 1914 and 1919 by William Gillette, an actor and playwright best known for portraying Sherlock Holmes.
The castle, originally called the Seventh Sister, is constructed of local fieldstone supported by a steel framework and features a 24-room mansion that spans approximately 14,000 square feet. Gillette personally designed the castle and most of its unique interiors, including hand-hewn southern white oak woodwork, intricate carved wood doors, and creative furnishings such as built-in couches, movable tables, and carved light switches.
The castle also has secret passageways, a fireplace with a water-based fire suppression system, and panoramic views of the Connecticut River from its hilltop location atop the chain of hills known as the Seven Sisters. The grounds include hiking trails, a miniature railway, stone bridges, and scenic overlooks, creating a fairy-tale atmosphere that attracts visitors from all over.
After Gillette's death in 1937, the state of Connecticut purchased the property in 1943, and it has since been preserved as one of Connecticut’s most popular historical attractions and state parks.
