Park
Great Valley Grasslands State Park protects one of the Central Valley’s last intact tracts of native grassland, wetland, and riparian habitat on about 2,800–2,826 acres near Stevinson and the San Joaquin River.
The park is part of the larger Grasslands Ecological Area and supports vernal pools, marshes and wet meadows that attract dozens of overwintering waterbird species and provide habitat for rare species like the giant garter snake, California tiger salamander, and endangered vernal pool invertebrates.
Largely undeveloped for day use, it draws visitors for spring wildflower displays, wildlife watching, bank fishing and paddling from the boat launch, while park managers and partners are actively restoring floodplain connectivity—removing or notching levees and using prescribed burns—to improve habitat for fish and native plants.
The park’s general‑plan process aims to expand public access and interpretive opportunities while protecting sensitive resources, so visitors should check current access advisories (some levees or day‑use areas may be seasonally closed) before traveling.
