Green Pastures Recreation Area spans 133 acres within the George Washington National Forest near Clifton Forge, Virginia, and holds historic significance as the only federal recreation site built specifically for African Americans during the segregation era in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It features over eight miles of hiking and biking trails, a small manmade lake once used for swimming with a sandy beach, a rustic log picnic shelter with a stone fireplace, open fields, restrooms, and diverse habitats attracting birds, mammals, butterflies, amphibians, and reptiles like towhees, cardinals, and goldfinches. Now managed as a satellite of Douthat State Park and reopened to all visitors in 2021 after a period of closure, it's open seasonally from May to October for day use with a parking fee, accessible by car via Green Pasture Trail, and offers a mix of restored front areas and wilder back sections for picnicking, exploration, and nature observation.
