Park
Henry W. Coe State Park is a vast, rugged wilderness in the Diablo Range southeast of San Jose that protects about 87,000 acres of ridges, deep canyons, oak and chaparral woodlands, seasonal creeks, and open grassland popular with hikers, backpackers, mountain bikers, and equestrians.
The park contains over 250 miles of trails, a network of remote backcountry campsites and several day‑use areas including Coe Ranch, and elevations from roughly 700 to 3,560 feet that create big temperature and habitat variation across the landscape. Historically a collection of ranches donated and acquired for preservation, the park supports diverse wildlife (deer, bobcat, raptors and occasional mountain lions) and important watersheds, so visitors should be prepared with maps, water, and wilderness skills for long, exposed routes and limited services.
Recreational highlights include long backpacking trips, spring wildflowers, rugged ridge hikes with wide views toward the Central Valley and Santa Clara Valley, and seasonal road or gate closures—permits, fees, and backcountry regulations apply for overnight use.
