History Museum
Historic Cold Spring Village in New Jersey is the state's largest open-air living history museum, located on about 30 acres in Cape May County.
It features 27 restored historic buildings that have been relocated from around the county, showcasing everyday life in South Jersey during the 1790-1840 period known as the "age of homespun."
The village provides an immersive experience with historically dressed interpreters who demonstrate traditional crafts, trades, and activities such as butter churning and farming heritage crops. Many of the buildings, including the Cold Spring Grange Hall and the Cox Hall Cottage built in 1691, are listed on historic registers.
The village was founded 50 years ago by Annie and Joseph Salvatore, who envisioned preserving the region’s vernacular architecture and cultural heritage. It operates as a non-profit and includes a variety of revenue sources, including an onsite craft brewery housed in a historic barn. The village combines education with hands-on family activities, offering visitors a glimpse into rural 19th-century American life with a focus on agriculture, fishing, and community trades.
