Park
Hueston Woods State Park spans nearly 3,000 acres across Butler and Preble counties in southwestern Ohio, about five miles northeast of Oxford, surrounding the 625-acre man-made Acton Lake formed by damming Four Mile Creek in 1956.
Acquired by the state in 1941 and opened as a park in 1957 after serving as a prison camp, it preserves over 200 acres of old-growth beech-maple forest designated a National Natural Landmark in 1967, offering a rare glimpse of Ohio's primeval woodlands with towering trees, ferns, and wildflowers.
Visitors enjoy boating and fishing on the lake, swimming at the beach, over 40 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, an 18-hole golf course, archery, fossil hunting in the unique glacial till plains, a resort lodge, cabins, campground, nature center, and winter activities amid abundant wildlife.
