Park
Illini State Park covers 510 acres along the south bank of the Illinois River in LaSalle County, Illinois, between Marseilles and Ottawa, named for the Illini Native Americans who once inhabited the area.
Dedicated in 1935 after entering the state park system in 1934, it features rustic Civilian Conservation Corps structures from the 1930s, scenic views of the river's Great Falls dropping three feet over two miles, and the adjacent barge canal with Marseilles Locks where visitors watch large vessels pass.
Shaded by hickory, oak, walnut, ash, elm, cottonwood, and maple trees that blaze with fall color, it offers picnic shelters with fireplaces, playgrounds, hiking trails, fishing and boating ramps, camping, hunting, abundant wildlife like deer, raccoons, groundhogs, and songbirds, plus reminders of industrial history including a nearby historic mine and the Illinois & Michigan Canal.
