Park
Jug Handle State Natural Reserve, on the Mendocino Coast between Mendocino and Fort Bragg, protects a rare sequence of five marine terraces that record roughly 100,000 years of ecological succession, so a single hike passes through coastal prairie, mixed forests, redwoods and the unusual Hans Jenny pygmy forest on the oldest terrace.
The park’s 2.5‑mile Ecological Staircase Trail and other paths lead from headlands and bluffs down to a deep sandy cove and the Jug Handle Creek beach, offering interpretive signage, dramatic coastal views, diverse plant communities (including bishop pine, grand fir and redwood) and good birdwatching.
Established to preserve these distinct ecological stages and their geologic history, the 700‑plus acre reserve features picnic areas, restrooms and a nature‑education center nearby, and visitors are asked to follow trail rules to protect sensitive habitats such as the pygmy forest.
