Juneau

Juneau, Alaska, United States

Locality

Juneau, Alaska, originally inhabited by the Tlingit people, was established as a city following a gold discovery in 1880 by prospectors Joe Juneau and Richard Harris.

Situated along the Gastineau Channel, it rapidly grew from a mining camp into a town fueled by gold mining operations such as the Alaska-Juneau and Treadwell mines. In 1906, Juneau became Alaska's capital, replacing Sitka, and later merged with nearby Douglas Island in 1970 to form the largest city by area in the United States.

Surrounded by mountains and water, Juneau remains a center for government, tourism, fishing, and outdoor recreation, while also preserving its rich Native heritage and natural beauty in the Alaska Inside Passage region.
