Archaeological Museum
The Kelsey Museum of Archaeology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor was founded from the collection efforts of Francis W. Kelsey, a Latin professor who began acquiring artifacts in 1893 to aid his teaching.
The museum, housed in Newberry Hall since 1928, holds over 100,000 artifacts primarily from archaeological excavations in Egypt, Iraq, and the Mediterranean conducted during the 1920s and 1930s. These include pottery, coins, inscriptions, and art objects that give insight into ancient daily life, religion, and art.
In 2009, the museum expanded with the William E. Upjohn Exhibit Wing, adding space for exhibits, storage, and conservation. The building itself is a historic Richardsonian Romanesque structure, originally built for the Students' Christian Association.
The Kelsey Museum serves both educational and research purposes and continues to engage the public with its rich collection and rotating exhibits.
