It opened on May 3, 1975, after nearly two years of construction, inspired by the success of its sister park, Kings Island in Ohio. The park originally featured 15 rides and attractions including roller coasters like the Rebel Yell (now Racer 75), a log flume, a drive-through animal safari called Lion Country Safari, and themed areas such as Old Virginia and International Street.
Over the years, the park expanded significantly, adding new roller coasters, thrill rides, and a water park that evolved into Soak City. Kings Dominion is known for a mix of classic and modern rides, family-friendly entertainment, and seasonal events, making it a popular destination in the region for visitors of all ages.
