Historical Landmark
Kūkaniloko Birthstones State Monument is a sacred 5-acre site in Wahiawā, Central Oʻahu, Hawaii, dating back to around 760 AD and serving as one of ancient Hawaiʻi's most important royal birthing places until the mid-1600s.
Here, high-ranking aliʻi (chiefs) gave birth to future rulers on a central stone supported by attendants, witnessed silently by 36 aliʻi seated on surrounding stones symbolizing their rank, with drums announcing the event and chants reciting genealogy.
Comprising about 180 large stones—some carved with grooves, basins, or petroglyphs—this National Register of Historic Places site (listed 1973, expanded 1995) between Waiʻanae and Koʻolau mountains may also have had astronomical functions, now protected by groups like the Hawaiian Civic Club of Wahiawā since 1960.
