Park
Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area is a 384-acre forested park in the ʻAiea Heights hills above Pearl Harbor on Oʻahu, Hawaii, USA, about 12 miles from Waikīkī, featuring groves of Norfolk pines and lemon eucalyptus that fill the air with a citrus scent.
At its entrance stands the ancient Keaīwa Heiau, a 16th-century healing temple (heiau hoʻola) built by Chief Kakuhihewa, where kahuna priests used native plants for laʻau lapaʻau medicine, prayers, and treatments within its 100-by-160-foot stone-walled enclosure.
Highlights include the 4.8-mile ʻAiea Loop Trail through native koa and ʻōhiʻa forests to Puʻu Uau summit with Pearl Harbor views, remnants of a 1944 B-24 plane crash, camping, picnicking, and a resident caretaker, open daily from 7 a.m. to 6:45-7:45 p.m. (seasonal).
